An unusual commemorative card of a Primary School play by the children of Carmichael Primary in 1907. Such a performance reflects the Nationalism prevalent in Britain at the time. By 1907, Britain had finally won the 2nd Boer War. Jingoism about the Boer War was replaced by a desire to put Germany in her place. In 1907, a major programme was initiated to build Dreadnought battleships. This was part of British policy to ensure that the British Navy was twice as powerful as any other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The subject of the Lancers is interesting. The Lancers took part in a heroic charge at the battle of Omdurman in the Sudan against the forces of the Madhi in 1898. Young Winston Churchill took part in this. It was a pretty foolhardy thing to do, but it stirred people’s hearts and patriotic feelings.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":878,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","template":"","categories":[14],"tags":[302,244],"published_year":[221],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/clydesdalesheritage.org.uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/postcard\/877"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/clydesdalesheritage.org.uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/postcard"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/clydesdalesheritage.org.uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/postcard"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/clydesdalesheritage.org.uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=877"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/clydesdalesheritage.org.uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/878"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/clydesdalesheritage.org.uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=877"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/clydesdalesheritage.org.uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=877"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/clydesdalesheritage.org.uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=877"},{"taxonomy":"published_year","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/clydesdalesheritage.org.uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/published_year?post=877"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
