Index of parishes in the upper ward of Lanarkshire

Throughout most of the 19th century, the upper ward of Lanarkshire comprised of twenty parishes. Follow these links to explore stories and records from each parish:

  • Carluke parish, including the town of Carluke and the villages of Braidwood, Law, Kilcadzow, and Yieldshields.
  • Carnwath parish, including the village of Carnwath and the villages of Auchengray, Braehead, Climpy, Forth, Haywood, Kaimend, Kersewell, Newbigging, Tarbrax, Woolfoods, West End, Wilsontown, and part of Carstairs Junction.
  • Carmichael parish, including the villages of Carmichael, Douglas Water and part of Rigside.
  • Carstairs parish, including the villages of Carstairs, Ravenstruther, and most of Carstairs Junction.
  • Covington parish, including the villages of Covington and Thankerton.
  • Crawford parish, including the villages of Crawford and Leadhills.
  • Crawfordjohn parish, including the village of Crawfordjohn.
  • Culter parish, including the village of Coulter (previously Culter).
  • Dolphinton parish, including the village of Dolphinton.
  • Douglas parish, including the villages of Douglas, Glespin, and part of Rigside.
  • Dunsyre parish, including the village of Dunsyre.
  • Lamington parish, including the village of Lamington
  • Lanark parish, including the Royal Burgh of Lanark and the villages of Cartland and New Lanark
  • Lesmahagow parish, including the town of Lesmahagow, and the villages of Auchenheath, Blackwood, Boghead, Coalburn, Crossford, Hazelbank, Kirkfieldbank, Kirkmuirhill, New Trow, and Turfholm.
  • Libberton parish, including the villages of Libberton and Quothquan.
  • Pettinain parish, including the village of Pettinain.
  • Symington parish, including the village of Symington.
  • Walston parish, including the villages of Walston and Elsrickle.
  • Wiston parish, including the villages of Wiston and Roberton.
