High Street, Lanark
This is a photochrom postcard of Lanark High Street is probably late 1950s/1960s. Notice the post-war central reservation. There is a story that the chain was purchased by Lanark Council from the Navy as it was surplus anchor chain. Whether this is true or not, I can not say or whether this is just one of Lanark’s legends.
Also of interest is that the pavements were not as wide as today and the street was better for parking or for use by ambulances and fire engines!
