Church at Coulter

This is a pre 1st World War card showing the church at Coulter, which was produced for James Jackson, Stationer in Biggar. The present church was built in 1810 on the site of a Medieval Church. It was later modified in 1899.

The origins of a church at Coulter go back to 1208 when Sir Richard was parson at Coulter. He was mentioned in the Liber de Calchou (the book of Kelso). In 1296 Master Pieres Tylliol swore oath of allegiance to Edward I at Berwick. Several local families were rectors of Coulter including Master Thomas Bailye in 1496-7. Possibly he was from the Baillie family of Lamington.
