Act passed by British Parliament establishing a Gaol in Lanark

Year: 1833

This is the front of the document showing the Act passed by the British Parliament in 1833, for the erection of the Sheriff Court and the Prison. This Act was passed during the reign of William IV.

By the 1880s, the Sheriff Court had been extended further, though by that time the gaol (jail) had fallen out of use. Its design can be seen on the Ordnance Survey Map of 1864.

In the Act, the old gaol near the Tolbooth was to be demolished and the entrance to the Wellgate widened.
