Charter of Kelso

Year: 1159

This is a picture taken from the charter of Kelso dating to the reign of Malcolm IV of the foundation of Kelso. This was in 1159. Already Lesmahagow Priory had been founded by Malcolm IV’s grandfather David I in 1144.

Despite that, Kelso was the mother house of Lesmahagow as it moved from Selkirk in 1128, having been at Selkirk for only 15 years.

The original charter is still in the hands of the Duke of Roxburgh.
