New Lanark

Year: 1905

This is a picture of New Lanark c.1905. It shows many interesting features including the chimney from the steam generation plant. The power from the plant went through a series of belts across the bridge to drive the mill machinery.

The foundations of Mill 4 are in this photograph. It was destroyed by fire in 1883. The other mills were designed in such a way to prevent fire from damaging the structure of the Mills. This was a major innovation and still a much admired feature of New Lanark to this day.

The large building in the foreground is the building for the Formation of Character.
